‘During the implementation and the use of an EPD everything revolves around a ruthless amount of data. This needs to be supported by hardware that NEEDS to perform. For this very reason we have selected E-Storage as our partner.” (Ton Hafkamp, programme director implementation Epic St Jansdal)
When we were to choose a new electronic patient dossier (EPD), St Jansdal had just formulated a new strategy. The hospital wants, in contrary to the merging trend of hospitals, to remain independent. This hospital wants to prove it has the right scope in its region. Digitization (hence including very sound IT) is crucial for this ‘independence strategy’.
Epic (the EPD application) was a choice of the doctors, the nurses and the management. The board has enforced this choice. The Epic project team (comprising doctors, nurses and managers) started in March 2015 and worked very planned and decisively to the go-live.
A solid infrastructure is a requirement for the placement of EPD applications. E-Storage placed, at the right moment, not the cheapest but certainly the best proposal. E-Storage won the tender based on quality, reliability and patience. We have identified all risks together. Meanwhile, Epic calls our implementation and go-live the best in the Netherlands. The project is technically, financially and planning-wise very well executed. Everything that came our way has been tackled and dealt with.
‘Behind every corner lies a new challenge.’
Since Epic has been live on October 1st, the next important phase is the technology. How do you make it work in such a hospital. From October 1st onwards we have been gathering an incredible amount of data, which is a beautiful basis to improve from. Besides, we can grant our patients fantastic access to his/her file via MijnStJansdal. From his/her EPD, a patient can communicate with the healthcare team, and have an overview of the appointments, connected visit reports and prescribed medication. The patient can propose suggestions for improvement in his/her dossier. The starting point is transparence.
